Jack Laidlow interviews the Vanities. In this short interview Jack talks to Adam, the keys and bass player for local Cardiff indi-electro band- The Vanities. The band originally formed over 20 years ago, however having gone on a long hiatus, reformed in 2020. Here, we discuss pretty much everything from pottery classes to Suede as well as their new upcoming single- Private Army, to be released on March 31st. Many thanks to Solway Radio.

Art Pop duo Blancmange formed in the late 70’s and have since sold over 200,000 albums. Steve Johnson caught up with frontman, Neil Arthur to look back on his stellar music career and find out what’s still to come. Blancmange play Y Plas, Cardiff, on Friday, October, 14th. New album released 1/10/22
Reef have always been hailed as one of the UK’s best and most respected and prolific live acts. Fronted by Vocalist Gary Stringer, bassist Jack Beasant and Jesse Wood on guitar (replacing original guitarist Kenwyn House in 2014). Since forming in 1993 the band have released 5 studio albums and sold an excess of 3 Million albums worldwide, with each of their releases reaching Top 40 in the UK.
Since then, the band have continued to go from strength to strength smashing the UK Charts racking up listeners. The bands last release Revelation on Ear Records also produced by George Drakoulias propelled the band back into the Charts in 2018 receiving some of the best reviews of the bands career while also seeing the band appear on some of the Nation's biggest and Best TV and Radio shows including BBC1s, the One Show.
But where the group really shine is through their unmatchable performances. Whether they are headlining Hammersmith Apollo or playing at the likes of Glastonbury Festival the band are a force to reckoned with and a must for any festival.
On playing live Gary Stringer says: “It’s really exciting for me to go out and to play and to look into people’s eyes who are ready to rock already”. “You get on stage and throw that energy down and it comes right back. That’s how you get an exciting gig. That’s a feeling that’s addictive for a musician. It makes you want to keep going out and giving it your everything and playing hard and rocking out.
This spring sees Reef back where they belong performing at some of the biggest and best venues in the UK, as they embark on a string of live dates set to take place in April 2022.
Alongside this, the band have also been busy writing and recording a brand-new album which is set to dazzle both new listeners, and those who have been there from the very beginning. Dave Sharp was an original member of The Alarm until the surprise departure of front-man, Mike Peters, in 1991.
Post-Alarm, Dave headed for the USA, did a lot of touring and hooked up with the legendary producer, Bob Johnston (Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash and many more) to develop his successful solo career.
Dave’s had an amazing career, meeting, recording and performing with legends such as Willie Nelson and Neil Young.
He made appearances at the Farm Aid and Earth day festivals, alongside people such as Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Billy Bragg.
He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner, amongst others.

1989 saw the US release coast-to-coast hit album, Change, and #1 AOR single, ‘Sold Me Down the River’, from British rock band, The Alarm. Sadly, 1991 saw the surprise departure of the band’s lead singer.
Dave Sharp, co-founder of The Alarm had that previous year enlisted the help of legendary maverick record producer Bob Johnston (Dylan, Willie Nelson & Leonard Cohen) to help cut his first solo record. It was a determined young man who walked through the doors at The Hit Factory NYC in December 1990, and in under a week Sharp’s album Hard Travlin’ had been recorded, mixed and delivered for release to IRS Records.
A relentless two-year period of Stateside touring followed including appearances at Farm Aid concerts and Earth Day celebrations before Sharp returned to New York City in 1992 to perform for an audience of 25,000 gathered in Central Park to celebrate the 80th birthday of folk legend Woody Guthrie. It was a seminal event for Dave Sharp who performed alongside Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Billy Bragg and shared the stage with The Right Reverend Jessie Jackson.
In 1996 Sharp once again teamed up with producer Bob Johnston entering Credence Clearwater Revival’s studio in San Francisco to record and release his second solo album, Downtown America. Two underground hits followed, ‘The Ghost of Preacher Casey’ and ‘Give Me Back My Job’, which both received healthy rotation across the board at American radio and led to television appearances on country music’s Nashville Network.
Dave Sharp’s solo albums have received positive critical recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and over the past decade and a half Sharp has been fortunate to work alongside many of the artists he has long respected. Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash have appeared on his recordings. He has performed alongside Kris Kristofferson, Bill Munroe and Porter Wagoner. Whether solo or with a band, guitar in hand, Dave Sharp delivers the “Spirit of Rock & Roll.”

His music has been described as everything from folk and blues to rock, country and punk; his performances as legendary however one word can never be used to describe Dave Sharp: “Predictable.”
Dave Sharp has embraced mainstream popular culture whilst at the same time remaining one step away from its grasp . . . he likes it that way!

Peter Harris, perhaps better known as ‘The Major, is fondly remembered as a controversial late night radio talk show host, originally on CBC and later Touch AM.
Peter was a bookie, in Canton and came into contact with some of those who went on to launch CBC Radio, at the nearby Chapter Arts Centre.
Adopting the nickname of ‘The Major’, he was originally a radio, horse racing tipster. However, largely due to his love of music and gift of the gab, he soon became involved as a radio presenter.
Known for his sharp mind and razor wit, The Major soon developed cult status in South Wales.
Peter had a number of close friends within the music scene, being a particularly close pal of Andy Fairweather Lowe, amongst a good number of others.
He subsequently became friendly with the then, up and coming, American musician, Bruce Springsteen. Later in his career he returned to horse racing, working as a pundit for radio and TV.
Peter now lives in Cornwall and is happily retired but still has a fund of stories and a great way of telling them...

Linda Thompson became one of the most recognised names and voices in the British folk rock movement of the 1970s and 1980s, in collaboration with her then husband and fellow British folk rock musician, guitarist Richard Thompson, and later as a solo artist.
